Russia Accuses Australia of Misinformation Over Oscar Jenkins

Canberra, Australia – The Russian Embassy in Australia has accused the Australian government and media of misrepresenting the case of Oscar Jenkins, an Australian fighter currently in Russian custody. In a strongly worded statement issued on late Thursday, the embassy criticized Australia’s response, claiming it has been shaped by an “anti-Russian narrative” rather than an acknowledgment of national responsibility.

According to the embassy, Australian politicians and media outlets have contributed to fostering an environment where citizens are encouraged to travel to Ukraine to fight against Russian forces. It pointed to state-funded broadcasters and news platforms allegedly promoting the idea that military experience is not necessary to join the Ukrainian Foreign Legion.

The statement also accused Australian authorities of covertly approving such involvement, claiming that former defense personnel—reportedly a significant portion of Australians fighting in Ukraine—have been issued “foreign work authorizations” under the Australia SAMS legislation. This, the embassy argues, contradicts Australia’s official “do not travel” advisory for the region, calling it a “hypocritical disclaimer” that masks tacit approval of Australians joining the conflict.

The embassy further dismissed reports, including claims aired by Sky News, that Jenkins was tortured by Russian forces before his detention, labeling such accounts as “Kiev-fabricated fakes.”

Calling for Australians to avoid becoming embroiled in the war, the embassy urged citizens to “think for themselves and avoid trouble by staying clear of the Special Military Operation zone.”

The Australian government has previously called for Jenkins’ immediate release and warned of consequences should Russia fail to comply.
