The 78th Independence Day of Pakistan was celebrated in Australian capital Canberra on Wednesday with national zeal and fervour. A simple and dignified flag-hoisting ceremony was held at the High Commission to mark the day.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri hoisted the flag alongside the rendition of the national anthem. Messages from the President and the Prime Minister were also read out to the audience on the occasion.

In his remarks, the High Commissioner felicitated the Pakistani community in Australia on the occasion of Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day. He said that the Pakistan Movement, led by our founding fathers, was an arduous struggle that ultimately secured a separate homeland for us.

“14 August serves as a reminder of the great sacrifices they rendered to protect our rights and preserve our religious, cultural, social values, and economic prosperity”, he said.

The High Commissioner highlighted the nation’s abundant natural resources and their crucial role in driving economic growth and development. He also appreciated the role of the Pakistani Diaspora in projecting a positive image of Pakistan and contributing to its progress.

He stated that the government was committed to the welfare of overseas Pakistanis, and the High Commission was dedicated to facilitating the Pakistani community.

This year, as part of the Independence Day celebrations of Pakistan on 14 August, Canberraā€™s landmarks are to be illuminated in green and white from sunset to sunrise.
