Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reaffirmed Australian support towards a two-state solution

Australia while affirming support towards a two-state solution has welcomed a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza terming it a “constructive step towards peace and stability in the region”.

The agreement in Gaza was reached after 15 months of conflict and a devastating loss of civilian life.

“We urge all parties to respect its terms and safeguard a lasting peace, including ensuring the immediate release of all hostages and unimpeded and sustained increases in humanitarian assistance to all parts of Gaza”, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement on Thursday.

They affirmed that Australia will continue working with the international community towards a two-state solution – a Palestinian state and the State of Israel, living side by side in peace and security within internationally recognised borders.

They hoped this deal it will allow the Palestinian people the opportunity to rebuild, reform their governance, and pursue self-determination.

The agreement between Hamas and Israel will come into effect on Sunday if agreed to by the Israeli cabinet.

“Today must mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Israeli and Palestinian people,” Albanese told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.

acknowledging the plight of people of Gaza, Albanese said Australia is focused on what Palestinians want which is to be able to live in Gaza and the West Bank and to be able to live with peace, security, and prosperity.
