The Albanese Government has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, which includes the gifting of 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks to support the country’s ongoing defense against Russian military operation. Valued at approximately $245 million, this latest contribution aims to bolster Ukraine’s firepower and mobility, complementing the support provided by international partners to Ukraine’s armored brigades.
With this package, Australia’s total military assistance to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion exceeds $1.3 billion, while overall support surpasses $1.5 billion. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to Ukraine, stating, “Australia’s support for Ukraine has not wavered since Russia’s illegal invasion, and we will continue standing with Ukraine”.
Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, the Hon. Pat Conroy MP, will confirm the aid package directly with Ukraine’s Defense Minister during the NATO Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Brussels. He emphasized the tanks’ significance, stating, “These tanks will deliver more firepower and mobility to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and complement the support provided by our partners.”
The M1A1 Abrams tanks, previously a key component of Australia’s defense capabilities, are renowned for their durability and protection against enemy fire and improvised explosive devices. The tanks will provide a critical enhancement to Ukraine’s military, just as they have for the Australian Army. Australia will retain a small number of M1A1 tanks to facilitate the transition to the newer M1A2 fleet, as announced in January 2022.
In addition to providing equipment, Australia continues to contribute to multinational efforts under Operation Kudu, aimed at training Ukrainian military personnel.
Minister Conroy further highlighted the broader geopolitical context, stating, “As we face a challenging geostrategic environment, it is important that we continue to work together with our partners around the world to deter aggression and coercion, and to protect the global rules-based order.”
Australia remains resolute in its support for Ukraine, with ongoing cooperation with the Ukrainian government and international allies aimed at ending the conflict on Ukraine’s terms.
