In a significant move to combat antisemitism and ensure national security, the Australian Government has announced counter-terrorism financing sanctions against the white supremacist online network Terrorgram. This marks the first time an Australian government has imposed such sanctions on an entirely online-based entity.

Terrorgram, an online network known for promoting white supremacy and racially motivated violence, will now face severe legal consequences. It is now a criminal offence to use, deal with, or make assets available to Terrorgram, with penalties including up to 10 years’ imprisonment and substantial fines.

Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong emphasized the government’s commitment to disrupting terrorist activities and preventing the recruitment and radicalization of individuals online. “There is no place in Australia for antisemitism, hatred, or violence,” she stated in a statement on Monday.

In addition to targeting Terrorgram, the Australian Government has re-listed four other entities for counter-terrorism financing sanctions due to their promotion of nationalist and racist violent extremist ideologies. These entities include the National Socialist Order, the Russian Imperial Movement, Sonnenkrieg Division, and The Base.

The government has also imposed sanctions on Hizbullah’s new Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, a leading spokesperson for the Hizbullah.

This decisive action underscores the Albanese Government’s dedication to safeguarding Australians from the threats posed by violent extremism and terrorism, both domestically and internationally.
