The Australian Federal Government has announced the appointment of Ms. Gemma Huggins as Australia’s next Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism, succeeding Ambassador Richard Feakes. The announcement underscores Australia’s ongoing commitment to combating global terrorism and violent extremism, a priority that has been central to the nation’s foreign and security policy for decades.

Australia has long been a key player in international counter-terrorism efforts, contributing to global initiatives, regional capacity-building, and multilateral partnerships. From its leadership in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS to its active role in the Australia-New Zealand Counter-Terrorism Committee, Australia has consistently worked to strengthen global and regional security frameworks.

In her new role, Ms. Huggins will lead Australia’s international engagement on counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism. She will represent Australia’s interests at key international forums, advance cooperation with international partners, and collaborate closely with government agencies and non-government organizations to support national counter-terrorism efforts. Her work will align with A Safer Australia – Australia’s Counter-Terrorism and Violent Extremism Strategy 2025, which outlines the nation’s approach to addressing evolving threats.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the importance of the role in a statement, noting, “The global threat of terrorism and violent extremism is dynamic and constantly evolving. Close and effective engagement with bilateral, regional, multilateral, and non-government partners is vital to enhance counter-terrorism capability at home, in our region, and beyond, to keep Australians safe and Australia secure.”

Ms. Huggins brings a wealth of experience to the position. Most recently serving as Assistant Secretary of the Middle East Branch in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, she has a deep understanding of the geopolitical complexities surrounding counter-terrorism. Her previous diplomatic postings include roles as Australia’s Deputy Head of Mission to Lebanon and a posting to Zimbabwe, equipping her with a strong foundation in international diplomacy and security.

As Australia continues to navigate the evolving landscape of global terrorism, Ms. Huggins’ appointment signals a renewed focus on strengthening international partnerships and addressing emerging threats. Her leadership will be critical in advancing Australia’s counter-terrorism objectives and ensuring the safety and security of Australians both at home and abroad.

The appointment comes at a time when the global community faces increasingly complex and interconnected security challenges, highlighting the need for sustained collaboration and innovation in counter-terrorism efforts. Australia remains steadfast in its commitment to playing a leading role in this critical area.
