Queensland Labor has won the state election, after Liberal National Leader Tim Nicholls rang Annastacia Palaszczuk to concede defeat, nearly two weeks after voters went to the polls.

Mr Nicholls phoned Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday morning to congratulate her, ABC reported. It paves the way for Ms Palaszczuk to go to the Governor and form a government with a slim majority.

But this will not happen until the Electoral Commission has declared the results in 47 seats — the requirement for a majority.

It has currently declared 45.

Mr Nicholls will not contest a leadership ballot when the LNP’s party room meets next week.

He said he was proud of the positive campaign the LNP ran.

“I take full responsibility for it,” he said.

“At the party room on Tuesday I will not seek to continue as LNP leader. It is time for a new generation of LNP leaders.

“I wished the Premier well for the future given the important role she now has to get on with building a better Queensland without delay.”

Current LNP Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington will contest the ballot at the party room meeting.
