Islamabad: In a significant move to enhance collaborative efforts against human trafficking, Australia and Pakistan have agreed to convene a meeting of the Joint Working Group in Australia this December. The agreement was established during discussions between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Interior, Mohsin Naqvi, and Australian High Commissioner, Neil Hawkins, at the Ministry of Interior in Islamabad on Thursday.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing mutual interests, particularly in the realms of border management and countering human trafficking. Both parties also explored the possibility of designating Islamabad Capital Territory and Australian Capital Territory as sister cities.
Minister Naqvi informed the High Commissioner about the deployment of a dedicated team tasked with border management and combating human trafficking, emphasizing their commitment to preventing human smuggling to Australia and other nations. He noted ongoing efforts to enhance the capabilities of Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to effectively tackle this issue.
In response, High Commissioner Hawkins offered insights into Australia’s advanced border management techniques and equipment, which Pakistan could leverage to bolster its efforts. Minister Naqvi expressed gratitude for this support.
Additionally, Minister Naqvi announced that the Pakistan cricket team is scheduled to visit Australia on October 30, presenting a unique opportunity for both nations to engage through sport. He confirmed that No Objection Certificates (NOCs) will be granted to Pakistani women cricketers for participation in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League. The Australian High Commissioner assured cooperation in training initiatives, particularly for young female cricketers and the blind cricket team.
As a gesture of goodwill, High Commissioner Hawkins presented Minister Naqvi with a cricket bat signed by the Australian cricket team. Minister Naqvi further highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating the relocation of Afghan refugees to Australia, underscoring ongoing collaborative efforts between the two countries.
