Australia has announced an additional $10 million in humanitarian aid to support ongoing relief efforts in Gaza, as the region grapples with a deepening crisis. In a joint statement on Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Penny Wong emphasized the urgency of the situation, stressing that the funds will be used to address critical needs, including the provision of nutrition and essential hygiene and health products.
The newly allocated funds will be channeled through UNICEF and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) to provide life-saving assistance, with a particular focus on supporting women and girls. This includes the delivery of nutrition aid and the distribution of hygiene and dignity kits.
“Rapid, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian relief must reach civilians, and aid workers must be protected to enable their lifesaving work,” Senator Wong stated. She also reiterated Australia’s ongoing efforts to advocate for a ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and the release of hostages caught in the conflict.
Since October 7, Australia has committed $82.5 million in humanitarian assistance aimed at addressing the escalating crisis in Gaza and alleviating the long-standing refugee situation in the region.
Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Pat Conroy, echoed the gravity of the situation, labeling it “catastrophic.” He underscored the need for civilians to be spared from the consequences of the violence. “The suffering must stop,” Conroy declared, adding that Australia fully supports the UN Security Council-endorsed ceasefire and is urging both parties to implement it immediately.
“Any delay will only result in further loss of life,” Conroy warned, reaffirming Australia’s commitment to ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those most in need, while also calling for the protection of all aid workers.
