Independence Day of Azerbaijan: Azerbaijan-Australia Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group inaugurated

On the 106th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Baku is hosting crucial COP29 later this year

On the auspicious occasion of the 106th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Australia hosted a reception on May 28 at the Australian Parliament, to mark the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Australian Federal Parliament and to celebrate the honour of hosting COP29 in Baku later this year.

Dr. Vagif Jafarov, Chargé d Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Australia while welcoming the guests termed the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group in
the Australian Federal Parliament, a testament to the growing cooperation and mutual understanding between Australia and Azerbaijan.

Bilateral relations between Australia and Azerbaijan have seen dynamic progress in recent years. The first political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and DFAT were conducted in Baku on May 1st this year. These consultations covered various aspects of cooperation, including political,
economic, and humanitarian fields, indicating a commitment to further enhancing
bilateral ties.

Event was attended by Mike Freelander, Chair of the Australia-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, Rick Wilson, Vice Chair of the Australia-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, Dr. Sally Box, Assistant Secretary and Head of Delegation for Australia to the UNFCCC, diplomats, members of parliament, media representatives and members of Azerbaijani community.

Referring Azerbaijan’s ambitious green vision, Dr. Vagif said that Azerbaijan is ready to host COP29, which demonstrates our commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

“Hosting COP29 provides Azerbaijan with a unique opportunity to showcase its progress and leadership in green energy. It also reinforces the country’s commitment to international collaboration in addressing climate change”, he added.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Azerbaijan currently produces around four times the energy it consumes and has one of the highest levels of energy self-sufficiency in the world.

Federal MP, Dr. Mike Freelander, Chair of the Australia-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group in his address expresses his optimism for a stronger democratic Azerbaijan.

He said the establishment of the Azerbaijan-Australia Friendship Group in the Federal Parliament marks a pivotal moment in strengthening diplomatic and bilateral relations between Australia and Azerbaijan.

“Parliamentary diplomacy provides a unique platform for direct dialogue and collaboration between legislators, fostering deeper cooperation and understanding, and enhancing dialogue on key issues such as trade, energy, and cultural exchange.

Later talking to Vibe Media, Dr. Mike Freelander hoped that with the strengthening of bilateral relations, Australia may open Embassy in Baku which give impetus to our friendly ties and people to people contacts.

MP Rick Wilson, Vice Chair of the Australia-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group greeted the Azerbaijani community on their Independence Day and remarked that since it’s independence, Azerbaijan has emerged as a vibrant and dynamic nation, contributing significantly to global affairs.

Dr. Sally Box, Assistant Secretary and Head of Delegation for Australia to the UNFCCC also addressed the reception and highlighted that Azerbaijan and Australia share commitment to environmental sustainability and the pursuit of green policies.

“Both nations recognize the urgent need to address climate change and are dedicated to fostering a greener future for generations to come. Their progressive policies have led to significant advancements in renewable energy development”, she said.

Both Australia and Azerbaijan share a common goal of reducing carbon emissions, with Azerbaijan to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by 35% by 2030, and increase this target by 40% in 2050, and Australia’s net zero emission plan by 2050.

Later, a presentation prepared by the Embassy of Azerbaijan titled “From Past to Present: COP29 and Our Green Vision for Azerbaijan” also presented provided the audience further insights into Azerbaijan, its plans, initiatives, and the significant steps being taken towards a sustainable future.,

A thrilling Musical Performance by the Tagiyev Musical School and a photo exhibition featuring Azerbaijan’s remarkable landmarks drew the participants attraction.

The guests were offered a delectable array of Azerbaijani traditional delicacies as well.
